The Journey of Lent

The observance of Lent is a means to refocus on spirituality in a culture that is increasingly secular. Lent, which begins a 40-day journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter, is marked by times of prayer and repenting for failures and sins as a way to focus on the needs for God’s grace. We prepare to celebrate God’s marvelous redemption at Easter, and the resurrected life we live, and hope for, as Christians.

Ash Wednesday, February 17, at 6 p.m.

We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. for an Agape Meal (chicken soup, bread and fruit), worship and celebration of the Lord’s Supper around our common table. It is a time for the entire family. It is less than an hour out of your day to begin walking the path of your Lord Jesus Christ to the cross…less than an hour.

Holy Week, March 28 through April 3

Jesus spent the last week of his life with his disciples instructing them with his teachings and preparing them for the inevitable future he faced. To really understand the resurrection and God’s costly grace, we must go through the darkness and hopelessness that Jesus’ disciples and followers went through. Our services during Holy Week become a powerful proclamation of the Transformative power of the Gospels and God at work in our lives.

Palm Sunday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning
We celebrate Jesus arrival in Jerusalem with our children taking an active role in “big church”. They will enter the sanctuary waving palm branches to help us celebrate Jesus victorious arrival in the Holy City.

Maundy Thursday, April 1at 7 p.m. in our Sanctuary
This is the day that Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples, sharing a meal with them that we call the Last Supper. The word “Maundy” means command given by Jesus to his disciples that they should love one another. Even as he knew that his arrest was imminent, he did not seek any consolation but instead gave his peace to his disciples who he know would be distraught and lost at this soon turn of events. We will have an intimate worship experience in the Sanctuary and celebrate the Lord’s Supper together.

Good Friday, April 2 at 7 p.m. in our Sanctuary
This evening we remember the crucifixion of Jesus with a simple but meaningful solemn service where the Sanctuary will be unadorned to wait for Easter.

Holy Saturday, April 3 at 6 p.m. in our Chapel.
A contemplative time of worship in preparation for Easter will be held in the Chapel. Come and spend 15 to 20 minutes in reflection on what God is doing. Open yourself up before God to hear anew the call “Come unto me.” O Lord, begin with me. Here. Now.

Your pastor and friend,
Ken
